Setting Router Lift Cutting Depth and Returning to a Setting

Set router lift cutting depth from a measured reference, recheck after locking and record a setup you can return to for repeat work.

A router lift’s dial is most useful after you establish what the cutter is doing relative to the workpiece. Turning the crank to a remembered number is not enough when the bit has been changed, the motor has moved in its clamp or the stock thickness has changed. Build the setting around a measured reference and preserve that reference for the job.

Choose the surface that defines the cut

For a height measurement above the table, use the clean tabletop or properly seated plate as the reference specified by your measuring method. For a joint, the critical result may instead be the fit between two pieces. Record which face of the stock rides on the table; flipping that reference face can change the result even when the cutter height stays constant.

Disconnect power before adjusting the lift or placing any gauge near the bit. Fit the cutter according to the router and bit instructions, then install the suitable ring and complete the mechanical setup. Do not compensate for insufficient lift travel by leaving too little shank engaged in the collet.

Make one controlled change at a time

Unlock the carriage if the model requires it, move toward the target and secure the lock. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance on approaching the final setting. Using a consistent final direction helps make the process reproducible where direction reversal introduces lost motion. If the setting is overshot, reapproach deliberately rather than making a series of unrecorded reversals.

Measure again after locking. A dial reading that looks right before the lock is applied does not establish the final cutter position. If locking repeatedly changes the setting, investigate the mechanism instead of compensating with an arbitrary extra turn. Use a representative test piece

After removing gauges and adjustment tools and restoring the complete safe operating setup, make a test cut using the router and bit manufacturer’s procedures. Use stock that matches the workpiece’s relevant dimensions and reference face. Inspect the fit or profile, then disconnect power again before a correction.

Write down the change and its direction. A note such as “raise from reference by a quarter turn” is more useful when paired with the lift’s documented travel per revolution. Different lifts use different travel, so a turn count should never migrate between machines without conversion.

For a repeat job, retain a labeled sample and note the cutter identity, reference face and material thickness. The sample provides a physical check when returning weeks later. If the setup will require a bit swap, read above-table bit-change access; changing the cutter normally calls for establishing the height reference again.
