Above-table height adjustment and above-table bit changing are separate capabilities. A lift may raise the cutter conveniently while leaving the collet below the plate or obstructing the wrench. Before choosing a lift for quick bit swaps, check the combination of lift travel, motor position, collet access and the router’s specified tools.

Kreg lists above-table collet access for the PRS5000. JessEm’s Rout-R-Lift 3.5XT page also describes above-table bit changes. In contrast, JessEm expressly says the Prestige does not provide them. All three are router lifts; the shared category does not settle this feature.
Even an advertised capability applies to an approved installation. A different motor position or unsupported adapter can change the available access. Start with the exact motor and lift match before comparing how far the collet rises.
Plan for the wrench, not just the nut
A visible collet nut is useful only if the appropriate wrench can engage and move as intended. Some routers use two wrenches, while others have a manufacturer-defined spindle-lock procedure. Use the tools and method specified for your router. A convenient lift crank is not a substitute for the collet wrench.
Disconnect power before reaching into the opening. Follow the lift’s bit-change sequence, including ring removal if required, and support the cutter safely while handling it. Do not reach across a sharp cutting edge simply to avoid moving the fence. If the fence blocks proper tool access, the setup may need to be disturbed and later re-established.
Do not gain reach by compromising grip
Moving a motor upward beyond its approved clamping position or extending the bit farther out of the collet can appear to solve access trouble. Neither is a sound workaround. Required motor engagement and bit-shank engagement remain governed by the manufacturers’ instructions.
If the approved installation does not provide the access you need, use the documented below-table procedure or select a different compatible system. A collet extension introduces another component with its own limits; it is not an automatic cure for a lift that was never designed for above-table changes.
Reset after the swap
Reinstall the correct ring, return to the working position, lock the carriage and remove every wrench and crank before reconnecting. Check clearances for the new cutter because its diameter and profile may differ from the old one. Our ring selection guide covers that choice.
Finally, re-establish cutting height from a measured reference. A new bit may sit at a different position in the collet even when its overall length appears similar. Above-table changes can reduce access work; they do not preserve the previous cutter’s zero or eliminate the need for a test setup.
