Router Lift Compatibility: Match the Motor, Plate and Table

A router lift has to fit two things at once: the router it holds and the table it sits in. A listing that confirms one half of that pairing has not confirmed the other. “Universal” usually describes a range of supported motors, not every router and every tabletop.

Start with the motor, not the kit name

Read the identification label on the router itself. A storage case or retailer bundle may identify a package containing several bases rather than the motor being clamped. Record the complete designation, including suffixes, and whether the motor separates from its base using the manufacturer's normal procedure.

Look for that designation in the documentation for the exact lift you intend to buy. An absent name means fit is unconfirmed; it does not automatically mean the motor cannot work. A clamp diameter alone cannot answer questions about housing shape, clamping length, ventilation or control access. Our motor diameter guide explains which measurement matters.

Then identify the plate version

INCRA provides a useful example of why version names matter. Its standard imperial Mast-R-Lift II has a 9¼ × 11¾-inch plate. The Rockler-exclusive version is 8¼ × 11¾ inches. The standard product page explicitly excludes Rockler and Bench Dog tables. Buying on the shared family name would miss a full inch of difference in width.

Check plate thickness, corner radius, ledge support and leveling hardware as well as length and width. The plate size checklist separates those measurements from the through-opening beneath the ledge.

Inspect the space the mechanism needs

The router and carriage move below the tabletop. A cabinet rail, dust box or table stand can obstruct them even when the plate seats correctly. Compare available space through the intended range of travel, including access to locks, speed controls and the power connection. This is particularly important in a shallow benchtop table.

What counts as a confirmed match?

The lift manufacturer names the exact motor or supplies written approval for it.
The required clamp position, collar or adapter is identified.
The table accepts the exact plate version and its support system.
The installed assembly has the clearance and accessible controls required by both manuals.

Keep that evidence with your order. If a seller substitutes a different plate size or revision, the original match no longer settles the question. For the subsequent mounting sequence, follow router lift installation alongside the instructions supplied with your equipment.

For an existing workshop, take photographs before shopping. A view of the router label and a view beneath the tabletop can resolve questions that an overhead product photograph cannot.
