A compact router can make a small table practical, but a lift does not turn a trim router into a larger motor. Start with the cuts you intend to make and the router manufacturer's permitted use, then select a mounting system that explicitly supports that router.

Why “65 mm” is not enough

Listings for small lifts often emphasize a clamp diameter. Matching the advertised diameter is only the beginning: the housing must present the right clamping surface, remain properly supported and leave ventilation and controls accessible. A protrusion or short cylindrical section can matter even when the measured diameter looks suitable.

There is also a terminology trap. “Compact lift” can describe the mechanism or footprint rather than the size of router it holds. Check the named supported models instead of inferring compatibility from the adjective. Our motor measurement explanation helps separate those meanings.

Cordless models need an extra question answered

SpeTool's P01004 page names the Makita DRT50 among its supported routers. That is a manufacturer listing, but it is not enough information to design an operational table arrangement on its own. Obtain the exact mounting instructions and verify the router manufacturer's table-use guidance before treating the combination as ready to run.

Consider how the battery is removed, where the controls end up and whether the assembly remains accessible through its full travel. Do not assume a switching arrangement intended for a corded router will control a cordless model. A convenient location for the lift crank cannot compensate for inaccessible power controls.

Match the work to the router

Small edge profiles and occasional adjustments create different demands from repeated heavy cuts. Use the router and cutter manuals to establish permitted bit sizes, operating conditions and cutting procedures. We do not assign an unsupported maximum cutter diameter or a universal depth per pass to all compact routers.

Keep the tabletop in the calculation

A small motor can still hang beneath a full-size plate. Conversely, a small plate may require a different tabletop opening from the one you already own. Measure the cabinet and table independently of the motor choice, leaving room to remove the router for maintenance.

Finish with a documented list: exact router, exact lift, any approved collar, plate version and access requirements. For the table side of that list, use plate dimensions and support. Missing documentation is a reason to ask the manufacturer, not a reason to substitute a homemade sleeve.
