Router Lift Drops or Changes Height: Stop and Check the Cause

Distinguish clamp slip, adjustment movement and plate movement; remove from service if retention is uncertain.

A changing bit height is not always the lift screw moving. The motor can shift within its holder, the carriage can move relative to the plate, or the plate can move relative to the table. Those are different faults. Stop routing as soon as the height changes unexpectedly; a ruined joint is the smaller concern if the motor is no longer retained properly.

Find which relationship changed

With the router disconnected, record the observed positions before loosening anything. Compare the motor body to its clamp, the carriage to the lift plate, and the plate to the surrounding tabletop. Use photographs and accessible reference points. Do not put fingers around the cutter or rely on the bit itself as a handle.

A loose motor needs a fit check

Verify the exact router against the lift’s approved configuration. A nearly correct sleeve or improvised spacer can make an unsupported motor look secure during assembly. Do not compensate by adding tape or tightening until something deforms. Return to the specified hardware and tightening instructions. Carriage drift may have a documented adjustment

The JessEm Mast-R-Lift II manual includes a thread-tension procedure for a situation in which bit height drops. Follow that model’s instructions only after establishing that the symptom is carriage movement, rather than a slipping motor or unstable plate. It is not a universal adjustment for Kreg, SpeTool, Rockler or a different JessEm lift.

A missing locking step is another possibility on lifts that require one. Re-read the adjustment sequence and identify the actual lock. Do not use a leveling screw as a substitute. After an authorized correction, verify height retention by the manufacturer’s prescribed checks before returning to work.

Separate drift from a measurement discrepancy

Backlash when reversing adjustment direction can change how a dial reading relates to movement; that is distinct from a secured assembly physically dropping during use. A test cut should follow a verified repair, not serve as the experiment for an uncertain clamp.
