A premium router lift should earn its place through a feature you will use. Finish, brand reputation and finely engraved scales can be attractive, but they do not tell you how the lift will fit into a particular routing routine.

Separate three kinds of convenience

Adjustment convenience concerns how you change height: handle access, travel per turn, readable reference marks and the locking sequence. Someone making small corrections to joinery may value a clear scale, while someone frequently switching cutters may care more about reaching a starting height quickly.

Bit-change convenience concerns collet access and the required wrench procedure. It is not guaranteed by above-table height adjustment. JessEm's Prestige makes the distinction explicit: it supports named plunge routers but does not allow above-table bit changes.

Configuration convenience concerns changing motors or accessories. INCRA's repositionable clamping blocks avoid separate motor adapters for its supported configurations. That could matter if you expect a motor change, but contributes less to a permanently dedicated pairing.

Read scale claims carefully

SpeTool states a 0.001-inch scale resolution for the P01002. That tells you how the scale is divided; it does not establish that every finished groove will have that accuracy. Workpiece variation, bit geometry, measurement technique and mechanical play remain part of the result.

Travel and locking need context

JessEm specifies 3.5 inches of travel for the Mast-R-Lift II. Available travel can affect access and adjustment range, but the table enclosure must leave space for the moving assembly. More travel on paper does not help if the motor contacts a shelf first.

Similarly, assess a lock by its place in the setup sequence. Can you reach it with the fence and dust fittings installed? Is its locked state clear? The most useful control is one you can operate consistently in your actual table.

Pay for the friction you want to remove

Write down the two tasks that consume time at your current table, then compare candidates only against those tasks and documented fit. Use the bit-change guide if access is the issue, or compare manual and powered controls if repeated cranking is the problem. This makes the upgrade decision concrete without assuming the most expensive mechanism will suit everyone.
