A router lift holds a compatible router beneath a router table and moves it vertically to set how far the cutter projects above the surface. On a common crank-operated design, you make that adjustment from the tabletop. The lift does not turn the bit: the router motor does that.

Follow the movement from handle to cutter

The top plate sits in a supported recess in the table. Under that plate, a carriage retains the router motor. Turning the height screw moves the carriage along its guides, carrying the motor and bit with it. The plate stays seated while the cutter height changes.

On the JessEm Mast-R-Lift II, for example, the imperial manual specifies one sixteenth of an inch of vertical movement per full crank revolution. That relationship belongs to this mechanism; another lift can use a different screw pitch. Scale marks let you plan a small change, while a measurement and test cut establish the actual result.

What the box does—and does not—replace

Lift: supports and positions the compatible router.
Motor: supplies rotation and holds the cutter through its collet.
Table: supports the lift plate and workpiece.
Fence and guarding: belong to the table setup and the operation being performed.

Why the motor mounting method matters

Many lifts clamp around a removable cylindrical motor, but this is not the only arrangement. Base-mounted plunge-router designs exist too. A compatible brand name alone cannot establish fit: the exact router, lift version and table opening all matter. Start with the compatibility decision sequence before choosing hardware.

What changes while you work?

The practical difference is access. You can make height adjustments without repeatedly reaching underneath the table to operate the router's own adjuster. Some combinations also bring the collet high enough for above-table bit changes; others do not. Adjustment access and bit-change access are separate features.

A lift cannot correct a loose fence, poor work support or an incorrectly seated bit. It also does not make a cutting setup automatic. If you already have convenient height adjustment, read whether a lift is worth adding before replacing equipment that works well.
