Router Lifts in Table Saw Extensions: Space and Support

Plan a router lift in a table saw extension around approved support, underside clearance, controls and unobstructed saw operation.

A router lift in a table saw extension can save floor space, but it also puts two working systems around the same table. The opening for the lift is only one part of the project. Support, clearance, operating controls and the saw's original functions all need room.

Begin with an approved extension arrangement

Identify the saw, extension and router-table insert system before selecting a lift. Use the extension manufacturer's load, support and mounting instructions; do not assume an empty-looking wing can accept the added equipment. A router motor and moving carriage create a different assembly from a simple filler panel.

Keep the saw's guards, rails, fence movement and other safety systems fully functional. If fitting a lift would require defeating or relocating a safety component outside the manufacturer's instructions, choose another arrangement rather than treating that conflict as a minor installation detail.

Map the space below the top

Look beyond the plate outline. Rails, braces, the saw cabinet, dust hoses and storage can occupy the same space the lift carriage needs. Consider the intended height range and the access needed to remove the motor for servicing.

Include plugs, cords and controls in that space plan. A component can fit while stationary and still become inaccessible or interfere with another part as it moves. The underside clearance guide gives this inspection its own sequence.

Check the plate support independently

Published plate dimensions provide a starting point. Kreg's PRS5000 and the standard imperial INCRA Mast-R-Lift II both specify 9¼ × 11¾ × ⅜-inch plates, but those numbers do not define a safe cutout or prove fit in an extension.

Confirm the ledge or approved support hardware, corner radius, retention and leveling method for the exact extension. INCRA's documentation distinguishes tables with a rabbeted ledge from those that may need its adapter. Plan two clear operating zones

Think through where stock travels during saw use and router use. The inactive setup should not obstruct the work or encourage reaching around an exposed cutter or inconvenient control. Follow each machine's instructions for isolation, setup and operation; sharing a tabletop does not combine their procedures.

Dust collection also needs a deliberate plan. A hose route that works for the saw may obstruct a lift crank, carriage or router cooling path. See router-lift dust collection before enclosing the underside.

The space saving is worthwhile when both tools remain straightforward to set up and use. If every adjustment requires dismantling the other station, a separate compact router table may be the more practical workshop choice.
