A router lift template controls an opening’s shape, but the finished fit also depends on the cutter, guide system and support detail specified for that template. The plate’s advertised width and length do not tell you everything needed to cut a safe, supported recess. Have the actual lift and the correct template instructions in hand before altering a top.

The outside edge of a template, the edge followed by a bearing or guide bushing and the finished plate opening may all be different sizes. A bearing-guided system and a guide-bushing system can require different offsets. Tracing the template’s outside perimeter onto the tabletop does not establish a usable cut line.
The support ledge is a separate feature from the through-opening. Its geometry must leave the plate properly supported while clearing the mechanism below. Some table systems use dedicated levelers instead. Follow the table and template manufacturer’s approved arrangement; a generic online rectangle cannot establish adequate support for an unfamiliar top.
Match the version, not just the brand
INCRA illustrates why the exact version matters. Its standard Mast-R-Lift II plate is 9¼ by 11¾ inches, while the Rockler-exclusive version is 8¼ by 11¾ inches. A template intended for one is not interchangeable with the other. Use the plate-size comparison to screen the dimensions, then confirm corner geometry and support with the supplied documentation.
The SpeTool P01002 manual contains conflicting dimensions: its specification panel gives a 9¼-inch plate width, but installation text mentions an 8¼-inch opening. That discrepancy is a reason to obtain clarification from SpeTool, not to choose whichever measurement seems convenient. Do not use either number from that passage as a cutting instruction.
A dry planning check saves the top
Place the actual assembly over the proposed location without cutting. Check fence travel, crank access, tabletop bracing and cabinet space. Mark which face of the top will be upward and how the lift will be oriented. A well-fitted plate can still leave its adjustment socket blocked by a fence or accessory.
If the approved template procedure calls for a trial in scrap, use the specified tools and verify that trial against the actual plate. A test opening should establish both seating and support; forcing the lift into a tight recess does not count as a successful fit. For an existing top whose manufacturer does not approve the modification, ask about a replacement top made for the lift instead.
Once the correct opening exists, the remaining task is installing and checking the lift. Keep the template’s model label with it so a future router-table project does not inherit an unidentified jig.
